This week’s prompts from the Writer’s Workshop are:
- Write a post based on the word reunion.
- Write a post with exactly 10 sentences.
- Write about the most humid place you’ve been.
- Did you ever get in trouble from someone other than your parents? Tell us about it.
- Write about a time you got a line or penalty.
- If you could only ask one question to each person you meet, what would that question be?
This is my first time participating and I’m going to stick with the non-fiction theme and choose #3 and #6 for simplicity sake.
3] The most humid place I remember is Florida. In 1965, right after high school, I moved to Vero Beach, FL from New Hampshire. My parents had temporarily rented an apartment in what used to be old military barracks while they waited to buy a house. We had three bedrooms, one for them, one for my two brothers, and one for me. Even room air conditioning was a luxury in most homes and we were barely middle-class. I remember laying in bed, not moving a muscle, with the sweat dripping off me.
Fast forward many years to my professional life when I traveled as a computer consultant. I was living in Rochester, NY but my work encompassed the entire US. One assignment took me southern Florida. I can still remember the morning when I took a nice shower, got dressed in my suit along with a half-slip, camisole, and pantyhose. Fixed my hair, put on my makeup, then walked outside. I was immediately dripping in sweat, my makeup started to run, and my hair wilted. So much for feeling professional.
My last memories were of motorcycle travel. My husband and I rode our motorcycles from our home in Tennessee to New Orleans. Due to the humidity, we were unable to use our cooling vests to help (unlike the midwest and southwest where they helped tremendously). We had to stop several times for me to cool down, most times going inside some place that had air conditioning. I much prefer my home state of Tennessee where we live up on a plateau and the humidity is rarely uncomfortable!
6] What question would I every person I met? That one is easy. Why or how did you end up in your current job or career? I think this should provide me with some interesting responses. So how about it – what would your response be?
Till next time…

Wow! How I got into my current career goes way back to growing up at my Nana’s. She was (wording appropriate for that time) a foster home for handicapped kids. She had several kuds that I remember. Some were deaf, some blind, some both. She had one really special guy named Mikey who had Lowe’s syndrome. He was the best!!
Fast forward many years and I got my bachelor’s degree in human services and my master’s in psychology. I worked for a while at a call center, because I had experience with the medical side of things. But I was not able to get a job in my field because my master’s was too general and didn’t lead to licensure.
Fast forward again and I was at a women’s night at church sitting with a friend and I mentioned that I had gone to school with the speaker, a counselor/ therapist. My friend said, “I didn’t know you were in the field”(psychiatry). I said I wasn’t and told her my story. She decided to introduce me to someone there at church who had launched an agency for working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I met her, had an interview, took a leap of faith and signed on to become a behavioral counselor. That was three years ago and not only do I love this new career, I believe I was prepared for exactly this time and place
Gotta love it when things fall into place….
A question I might go with might be, “When is the best time?” It’s somewhat open ended and might give me an insight on what the person I ask prioritizes. Then again, I’m a storyteller. I might ask “What do you dream about?”
I like the dream question!
I like having writing prompts sometimes.
