G: Grilled Cheese

A simple sandwich, right? I’m not talking the three or more cheese, extra ingredient grilled cheese but the simple one from my childhood. I have a specific method I use. Hubby hates it, but I love it (but he does eat them once done). LOL!

  1. Butter the inside of the bread, add 1-2 slices of plain old white American cheese (and yes, I know it’s not really cheese but it’s what I like), mush together.
  2. Start frying pan on medium-high with a large dab of butter.
  3. Butter the outside of the sandwich. Once the butter in the frying pan starts to melt, drop in in
  4. Move it around to spread the melted butter in the pan.
  5. Quickly butter the other side of the sandwich.
  6. Press down with spatula. Multiple times. With pressure!
  7. Flip after the first side is browned.
  8. Press down with the spatula. Multiple times. With pressure!
  9. Move it around to sop up the last of the melted butter in the pan.
  10. Press down with spatula. Yes, again. Get it nice and toasted!
  11. When done to your toasting level, remove and cut into four pieces.

I am a firm believer it tastes better when cut into triangles rather than squares. My mother only did squares so maybe it’s rebellion, but all my sandwiches get cut into triangles.

My A-Z this year are random thoughts, ideas, and whatever pops into my mind for the letter of the day. As in previous years, I will keep it short and sweet.

Till next time!

  1. Adorable post! We’re also fans of grilled cheese in this household, especially the kids (my husband loves making it for them whenever they’re home). A recent discovery – I know this might be blasphemous to the classic grill cheese chef – but an air fryer takes the grilled cheese to the next level LOL.

  2. I love how specific you are about your grilled cheese sandwich, from the ingredients and the process to the shape of the pieces 🙂

  3. Oh, those were my favorite Saturday or Sunday night meal! I’ve never had them buttered on the inside though. And it has to be Kraft American cheese, not cheese “food”. Now that I can’t do gluten, I’m not sure they’d have the same delightful squishiness and taste.

  4. Sounds like a lot of butter to me. I had always assumed a grilled cheese doesn’t use butter but I’m totally wrong. Sadly, the only cheese I ever known is American. And I like sandwiches cut in triangles, like pizza.

    Have a lovely day.

  5. “Cheese Dreams” were one of the few cooked dishes my Dad was allowed to make – 1st slice, butter side down in the hot frying pan, top with cheese, 2nd slice on top, butter side out, turn with spatula and press down- dreamy…

  6. Triangles were for when we were feeling posh.. ie rarely. Now, everyday packets of lunchtime sandwhiches are triangular, is that for less packaging.. I never buy that cheese but might need to have an occasional try at one of those.

    1. When we lived in Ecuador, we made them a lot (not sure why). Whenever I cruise and get an upset tummy, it’s time for a grilled cheese and potato chips. Always works!
