Growing up in the 50s, TV westerns were all the rage. Yahoo was shouted enthusiastically by characters whether they were chasing bad guys or celebrating catching a bad guy. But it was also to describe a stranger in town, or someone they felt was once fry short of a happy meal.
It isn’t used as much nowadays having fallen out of favor as many words do over time. I tend to use Whoo-Hoo more to celebrate something. Or even Woot!
But there is a very popular song that uses the word, YAHOO!
Do you ever say yahoo or know someone who does? What’s your favorite celebration word?
My A-Z this year are random thoughts, ideas, and whatever pops into my mind for the letter of the day. As in previous years, I will keep it short and sweet.
Till next time…

I tend to use a couple of celebratory words a lot : Outstanding and Fantastic
I use Woot a lot, and awesome.
Mostly now I use it to describe a person has done something dumb…”What a ya’-hoo!” (accent on first syllable) I might even call myself a yahoo. I don’t know why I would, though, because I don’t remember ever doing anything dumb.
Thanks for the morning giggle!!
I associate yahoo with the website which is similar to google. And also in the movie with I.Q. with Meg Ryan where the Einstein character shouts Yahoo when he rides on a motorcycle.
I sometimes shout yes for something happy but mostly I just make sounds or laugh.
Have a lovely day.
Good ones! Thanks again, for stopping by!
I have used yahoo that way but I have also frequently heard for a person who should know better than to do something or act a certain way but did it to be cool/funny/whatever.
Yes! THAT person….
I do have a friend who uses yahoo occasionally to describe someone.
It always makes me laugh when I hear someone called a yahoo.
I recognise yahoo as a celebratory exclamation but tend not to use it myself. I also think of the IT company. I also remember yahoos from Gulliver’s travels: Swift describes Yahoos as filthy with unpleasant habits, “a brute in human form”. So most frequently I think of yahoos as young hooligans and that is how I would most frequently use the word.

It’s been so long since I read Gulliver’s Travels, I had forgotten that. I really need to go back and read some of those classics again.
I feel like I haven’t heard yahoo much since Yahoo! the site fell out of common use. I love whoohoo though, and “hurray” or “hurrah!”

Whoo-hoo is a good one that I use, too.
It is interesting how language changes. I remember using yahoo for someone who is a little silly. Nice bit of nostalgia!
Language is truly always evolving….
I would more likely use woohoo. yahoo is also used in Australia as describing someone who’s uncouth, rough, possibly stupid….hard to even describe it.
Sounds like your yahoo is similar to our US alternate description. LOL!
