P: Pizza

As a kid growing up in a very small New England town, we rarely had pizza but when we did it was cheese only. I was in my late 20s when I realized you could get it with toppings. That came about by accident. I was between marriages and working as a bookkeeper in the office of a PVC pipe manufacturing company. There was another woman who answered the phones and did the other administrative tasks. She was everything I wasn’t but wished I was. Outgoing, vivacious, always laughing and cutting up, and a blonde (remember, I grew up during the “Blonds have more fun” Clairol era).

One Friday she ordered pizza for the office and when it arrived, it was fully loaded. I mean, fully. Back in the late 60s this often included anchovies – those salty little fish. I guts-upped and took a bite. Oh my, it was heavenly! I was a convert, no more plain cheese pizza for me.

Through the years I’ve eaten many different pizzas – thick crust, thin crust, deep dish – with many different toppings. I first tried a Hawaiian pizza when I was working in Little Havana in Miami. I loved it. I had deep dish pizza in Chicago. I’ve had “cardboard” pizza on cruise ships. I’ve tried many different brands – Pizza Hut, Pizza Inn, Papa John’s, Little Ceasar, and my favorite Domino’s.

I realize not everyone likes Domino’s, but it’s consistently been my favorite, the Extravganza – original hand tossed crust with pepperoni, ham, Italian sausage, beef, green onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and black olives. Yummy! Hubby prefers a simple mix – original hand tossed with pepperoni, Italian sausage, and mushrooms. (I sometimes give him my mushrooms, too.)

Do you like pizza? What’s your favorite? Okay, now I’m hungry. I think I still have a couple of slices in the freezer…

My A-Z this year are random thoughts, ideas, and whatever pops into my mind for the letter of the day. As in previous years, I will keep it short and sweet.

Till next time…

  1. Pizza is my favorite comfort food.iw mean, where else cal you fit 4 different food groups so delicious together? Kenn and I like hand tossed with sausage and mushrooms but that’s almost where the shared pizza ends. He likes green peppers on his a and I like mushrooms on mine. We’ve tried many different “frozen” pizzas over the years but recently tried one that is amazing! Cheese stuffed crust, chicken, bacon, ranch. It’s amazing!!

  2. Here in St. Catharines, we have so many pizzerias, that I can’t count them! I love pizza. It’s such a great “I don’t know what to have…” sort of meal, great for lunch or dinner.
Growing up in the Welland, Ontario area, one of my favourite memories is when I was old enough to stay up late with my older brothers, watching bad movies (typically monster flicks) and getting take out pizza in the wee hours of the morning. One of my brothers would drive into town to Santos Pizzeria (since closed) and pick up a cheese, mushroom and pepperoni pizza. I still have an inordinate fondness for that combination of toppings on my pizza, to this day.

  3. I used to always ask my kids when they were growing up and I was trying to get them to try something new, “What if you never tried Pizza?

  4. I don’t remember ever having pizza until I was in college, late 1960s. I remember my sister and I ordering a pizza and she got anchovies on it. First time. Not a favorite. I rarely have pizza now. Only if my grown kids are ordering it. I have had some good ones, just not something I get myself.

    1. We try to not get it more than once in several months, too many calories. But we sure to like it when we do!

  5. BEFORE I became gluten-intolerant, I loved black olive and pepperoni. My husband became a barbecue chicken fan – yuck. On our honeymoon in Quebec, we ordered a pepperoni and cheese that came in layers of cheese and pepperoni – so, so, so, sooooo good! Never had another one like it anywhere else in our 51 years married.

      1. Thanks! I do eat gluten free pizza sometimes. It’s always safer for me to make it at home or order frozen GF stuff. When I’m down a few more pounds I’ll check this recipe out. -24

        1. I need to cut carbs big time but for whatever reason, it’s harder this time around. Those pesky last 10 pounds (I’d be happy tolose even 5 of them).

  6. I love pizza. I remember when all my children would eat was cheese pizza, which wasn’t thrilling for me. My husband has celiac disease so his pizza is always gluten-free, so I left that to him. I was so excited when my children branched out and started adding toppings. Now we order one with pineapple, ham, and something else (I can’t think what). The second pizza is usually green olives, bacon, and red onion or pepperoni.

Great topic choice for letter P.

    1. Funny how kids can be – I know I have grown into a somewhat picky adult eater, simple foods. Not adventurous at all. But hubby will try anything once!

  7. I love pizza though I don’t often eat them with all the toppings. My favorite topping would probably be chicken, tomato, green and red pepper. Anchovies – just nope.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. Hmmm, never tried chicken on it but I know I used to love Popeye’s chicken tacos. Don’t know if they still make those…or if they are even still in business. LOL!

  8. We have a couple of local joints that make delicious pizza. They get creative with their specialty ones. Toppings I like and usually order for pizzas are green peppers, onions, olives, mushrooms, and pineapple. One thing I recently learned is that using worcestershire sauce is great for veggie pizza.

  9. I love pizza! I don’t make much from scratch, but I do enjoy making bread, so I make my own pizza. It’s not like I don’t enjoy a slice from Pizza Hut or other brands, but my homemade is my favorite. Now I’m hungry! 🙂

    1. Hubby likes to make it from scratch but he makes thin crust and I’m not a huge fan of that. Now we make keto pizza.

  10. I just wrote a comment, but I’m not sure where it went. In case you didn’t get it, I enjoy my homemade pizza the best! Your post makes me hungry. I love pizza!

  11. I can relate to growing up in a small town and no pizza. I remember when my mother re-married and our new dad asked us what kind of pizza we wanted, my sister said pepperoni, my mother said ham and pineapple, and me I didn’t care I just wanted to eat it all…so Dad bought us a loaded and it was so freaking good…. It was a Lisa’s Pizza from Old Orchard Beach. I’ve had many pizza’s since then but now I make my own pizzas and sometimes with sourdough crust. I love anchovies but my TCO gags at them so …no anchovies live in this house. I can’t say there is a pizza I don’t like to be honest!

  12. You’ve certainly struck a chord with this post, Donna, 32 thoughts on… I can’t remember when I first had pizza but my favourite is Pepperoni. I also like to make a Polenta pizza – cook polenta and when ready, pour out on a wooden board and spread flat. Then you put sauce and topping ]s as for a normal pizza and put under the grill to finish. If you have leftovers, cut into 1″ cubes and shallow fry till crispy on the bottom and the top heated through…

    1. If I can only have one topping, it would be pepperoni. I suspect that is the #1 favorite topping! Oh my, that polenta one sounds interesting. We have made a keto one a couple of times and it’s decent. Thanks so much for dropping by again!

  13. Mmm I haven’t met a pizza I don’t like! Though sometimes my stomach isn’t happy after I eat it, haha. Some are too greasy but I can never resist. Strangely, my son doesn’t like “delivery” chain pizza… so we only eat frozen pizza on rare occasions. A local place is really good though, so sometimes we splurge there.

    1. One of the best pizzas we’ve had was at a KOA and was a frozen brand. We arrived late, were exhausted and too tired to cook. Maybe that was why it tasted so good. LOL! Hey, frozen is cheaper than delivery!!

  14. My absolute favorite pizza is the thin and crispy supreme from Pizza Hut. There is a family owned Italian restaurant that also has good pizza but it’s thick crust. And while it’s very good, there’s just something about the thin and crispy crust that I enjoy more.

    1. I know most seem to love thin crust, but to me the thick chewy dough works best. Don’t know why, but love it. LOL!

  15. I like pizza but don’t eat it as often as I’d like LOL This may be controversial, but my favourite pizza is Hawaiian pizza, you know the one that has pineapple as a topping? 🙂
